Summary: In April of 1941, most of modern-day Slovenia was invaded by the Axis powers, with Italy occupying Ljubljana and most other lands to the south and the west. Now available for the first time in English, this book is a vivid and often disturbing account of that occupation. Beginning with the decision of the Fascist regime to annex Slovenia as an Italian province, it moves from the Fascists' n{EFBFBD}ave attempts to Italianize the population, through local resistance efforts and the brutal reactions against civilians, to the army's spectacular tactical and organizational failures and its ultimate collapse following Italy's defection from the Axis in 1943. Drawing on largely unstudied documents from Italian military archives, this study reintroduces us to a frequently misunderstood chapter in the savage history of World War II, one with repercussions that continue in the historical memory of Italians and Slovenians even today.
